Wimbledon Tennis Championships, hosted by the All England Club, are the most famous tennis championships in the World, generally accepted as the best, and form one of four championships that are referred to as the Grand Slam. The year begins with the Australian Open, continues in Paris on clay, with Wimbledon being the third of the four, and the only one now played on grass. The US Open finishes the year in the autumn.Wimbledon is the oldest, beginning in the 1870s. For the first few years there was only a Men's Singles but ladies were soon to participate. Dress was strictly white in colour but in those days, we did not see the shorts and polo type shirts of the modern day.Men wore long trousers, ladies almost maxi dresses, the time of informality was years away. The game of tennis originated almost a century and a half ago, and although there was a small professional circuit, the major championships and events were strictly amateur until the sixties. Perhaps the most famous tennis player who played in both the amateur and professional championships was Rod Laver who won all the Grand Slam events but turned professional. The game became open shortly afterwards and he returned to win Wimbledon once more. There has been a slight relaxation in the strictly white code. World brands insist on logos, and flashes of colour in their designs but predominantly white remains the rule in the 21st Century.Crowds come in their thousands each year for Wimbledon fortnight. Those lucky enough to have tickets to the Show Courts, Centre and Number One, can see the stars compete. Some have annual tickets others are members of the public who have got tickets from the ballot for which anyone can apply. Others simply queue overnight for the few remaining seats. There are eighteen courts in all, and the public with entry to the whole area can pick where to watch, and move around courts. Those deciding to spend all day until the close of play can queue and often gain entry to the Show Courts for the last couple of hours, unless a match of real significance is taking place.Strawberries and cream are a must, and the large screens on a grassed hill, named Henman Hill when he was the British Number One, allows the public to watch action on Centre and Number One Court.Wimbledon is not really an essential event on the social calendar but it holds a place on the World's Sporting Calendar as the premier event of its sport. But people still wish to look their best and modern colourful maxi dresses are seen throughout the large complex worn by those wanting something more than the casual jeans. Knowing Wimbledon fortnight and the English weather, even at the end of June when the event is held, an umbrella is useful too.
